5 Most Common Sports Injuries

Engaging in sports comes with its own risks. Accidents are all too real in the realm of athletics and that means participants put their health and wellness on the line every time they step up to the plate. News reports and stories about injured athletes are a mainstay in many publications, but that doesn’t mean they’re strictly experience by professional sports players alone. Sports injuries are especially common among novices and amateurs because of the lack of experience and knowledge. These 5 sports injuries are the most common of all, but if you read up on their causes and treatment, you just might be able to get back on the playing field sooner rather than later.

  1. Strains and Sprains – By far the most common of all sports injuries, strains and sprains can happen even to those who don’t engage in sports. A bad fall, the wrong footing, or even just going off balance can cause these injuries. A sprain occurs when a ligament, or the band of tissue that connects a bone to another bone, stretches beyond its limits. A strain on the other hand works under the same principle only instead of ligaments getting overstretched, muscles get the brunt. These are common in the wrist, ankles, and knees, and can range greatly in terms of severity. A visit to your doctor can be necessary if the pain is overwhelming. In severe cases, medication might be necessary.
  2. Knee Injuries – Millions of people visit their doctors every year for knee-related injuries. Because the knees are a particularly vulnerable part of the body, they are more likely to get injured than any other joint along the leg. Knee injuries can range from runner’s knee, tendonitis, bruised cartilage, and numerous others. Usually, a knee injury will require hot or cold compress, immobilization, and later on, passive gentle stretching to resolve problems.
  3. Shin Splints – Pain that occurs along the tibia is a common experience felt by many runners. This condition, called shin splints, affects the front outer side of the lower leg, but can also be felt towards the back or the inner sides. Runners might often experience this if they run on flat surfaces, have poor support from their footwear, or fail to perform the appropriate stretching and warm-up exercise prior to running. Another common cause of shin splints is flat feet. By acquiring the right running gear, performing the appropriate pre-run exercises, and consulting with your doctor, you can avoid this common sports injury for good.
  4. Fractures – Broken bones are common in high-impact sports and can come in many different forms. However, trauma is not the only cause for a fracture. Studies have shown that wear and tear can also cause bones to break. It only takes on fracture for an athlete to face the challenge of saying goodbye to a sport forever, so it’s best to steer clear of these sporting pitfalls with the right precautionary measures.
  5. Dislocations – Bones that are moved from their rightful alignment at the joint are called dislocations. These injuries can be resolved by closed reduction – a process that involves popping the misaligned bone back into its original place. Doctors will then apply a cast and prescribe the appropriate medication to manage pain if necessary.
